NBA Legend Begins New Journey After Lakers Exit
NBA superstar LeBron James has confirmed that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers next season, marking what he says will be the final contract of his legendary NBA career.
The 41-year-old, who holds the record as the league’s all-time leading scorer, is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after an eight-year spell that included an NBA championship victory in 2020.
James’ decision ends weeks of speculation over his future, with several teams reportedly interested in signing the four-time NBA champion. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat were among the franchises linked with a possible move for the basketball icon.
Announcing the decision on X, James said he believes he can help transform Philadelphia into a championship contender.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said.
A Career Defined by Championships and Records
James arrives in Philadelphia with one of the greatest resumes in NBA history. He has won championships with every team he has previously represented, collecting two titles with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers and one with the Los Angeles Lakers.
His move also comes after a brief moment of confusion from Miami, where the Heat mistakenly shared a link promoting an “introductory press conference” for James. The team later confirmed the post was an error made while staff were preparing for the possibility of his return.
Despite moving to a new team, James expressed his lasting connection to his previous clubs. Miami remains a significant part of his career, while Cleveland holds a special place because it is close to his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
James was selected as the first overall pick by the Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft. He helped Cleveland win its first NBA championship in 2016 before joining the Lakers in 2018 and leading them to another title two years later.

James previously suggested that he was close to retirement after last season, admitting he was unsure whether he would continue competing. However, he later revealed that his passion for basketball remained strong.
“I still truly love this game and I have more to give,” James said.
Reports indicate that James has agreed to a two-year contract with Philadelphia, including a player option for the second season. The deal is reportedly worth $8 million, a major reduction from his previous Lakers salary.
James explained that his decision was not motivated by money or personal reasons but by his desire to compete at the highest level.
He said he still wants to sacrifice, work hard, challenge himself and chase the feeling of winning another championship.
