The actress reflects on revisiting her iconic childhood role 14 years after the original series debuted
Ariel Winter is stepping back into a role that helped define her early career as Disney brings back one of its most beloved preschool franchises with “Sofia the First: Royal Magic.”
Fourteen years after the original series premiered in 2012, the new spin-off continues the journey of Sofia, Disney’s first little girl princess, as she enters a new chapter filled with magic, friendship and royal challenges.
The new series follows Sofia as she begins her studies at Charmswell School for Royal Magic, where she discovers she possesses extraordinary magical abilities and must learn how to control her powers.

For Winter, returning to the recording booth as Sofia felt like reconnecting with an important part of her life.
“It feels like a homecoming,” Winter said, describing the experience of working with the team again after more than a decade.
The actress first voiced Sofia as a young performer, growing up alongside the character. She said she never imagined she would return to the role years later as an adult.
“When I first auditioned for the show, I thought it would be such a dream,” Winter recalled, adding that continuing the role 14 years later feels like an honour.

At Charmswell School, Sofia studies subjects including spells, potions and battle charms while learning to use her powerful abilities.

Despite the bigger adventures and magical elements, Winter says Sofia’s most important quality has remained the same: her kindness.
She described Sofia as an empathetic character who always tries to see the good in others and find positive solutions during difficult moments.
Winter said playing Sofia has even helped her learn valuable lessons about communication and conflict resolution in her own life.
The actress believes Sofia’s positive spirit is one of the reasons the character continues to connect with audiences.

Series creator and executive producer Craig Gerber said the goal behind Sofia the First has always been to create entertainment that both children and adults can enjoy together.
