Burhan renews commitment to ending war

Burhan announced on Thursday that he had sent the letter to Trump amid diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which began in April 2023.

The United States is working through the Quad initiative alongside Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt to support efforts to end the fighting between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Washington has proposed a 90-day ceasefire, but Sudan’s army has opposed the plan.

US diplomatic pressure continues

In September, Washington refused to grant Burhan a visa to attend the United Nations General Assembly, a decision viewed as a response to his reservations about the proposed ceasefire.

Earlier in October, Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, met Burhan following Egyptian mediation as diplomatic efforts continued.

Conflict enters another year

Sudan descended into war in April 2023 after a power struggle between the army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted into open fighting in Khartoum and other parts of the country.

The conflict has caused widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis. Despite international mediation efforts, disagreements over ceasefire terms have continued to complicate attempts to end the fighting.

The war has also received less international attention over the past year amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
