Canada Reach Historic World Cup Last 16 After Eustaquio’s Late Winner Against South Africa

Canada secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa.

The decisive goal came in the second minute of added time when Eustaquio unleashed a precise low strike from the edge of the penalty area, breaking the deadlock in a match that had offered few clear-cut opportunities. His late effort sparked wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters, as the co-host nation reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in its history.

Before this tournament, Canada had lost all six of their previous World Cup matches. However, they have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround, beginning with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar during the group stage before producing another memorable performance to continue their impressive campaign.

The victory means Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16, with dreams of extending their historic run still alive.

The match itself was tightly contested, with both teams struggling to create meaningful chances. South Africa, who had qualified after finishing second in their group, appeared content to take the game into extra time but were punished by Canada’s persistence in the closing moments.

Canada created the better opportunities throughout the encounter. Defender Moise Bombito came close to opening the scoring when his powerful header was cleared off the goal line by Aubrey Modiba. The Canadians also appealed strongly for a penalty following a challenge on Richie Laryea, but the referee waved away the claims despite protests from head coach Jesse Marsch.

The introduction of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies during the second half gave Canada additional attacking energy. Returning after recovering from a hamstring injury that had ruled him out of the group stage, Davies immediately influenced the game with his pace and creativity.

Jonathan David and Promise David both threatened the South African defence with late efforts, while Canada’s attacking pressure continued to build as the clock ticked down.

Their persistence was finally rewarded when Eustaquio found space outside the penalty area before firing a composed finish beyond the goalkeeper to send Canada into the knockout rounds.

Following the final whistle, an emotional Jesse Marsch praised his players for making history and inspiring future generations of footballers across the country.

He told his squad they had become “Canadian heroes,” applauding their determination, commitment and belief throughout the tournament. Marsch also expressed confidence that their achievement would help grow the sport in Canada for years to come.

South Africa’s World Cup campaign, meanwhile, came to an end after a disappointing attacking display in which they managed only one shot on target. Despite their resilience for much of the contest, they were unable to hold out until extra time.

Canada will now prepare for a much tougher challenge in the Round of 16, but with momentum, confidence and key players returning to fitness, they will believe they can continue writing another memorable chapter in their World Cup journey.
