Macron arrives in Ethiopia for high-level African Union talks

French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Addis Ababa for a diplomatic visit focused on regional security, development cooperation, and international investment, ahead of high-level talks at the African Union headquarters involving global and continental leaders.

Macron was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during his third official visit to Ethiopia since 2019. The two leaders exchanged greetings on the tarmac, with Abiy later referring to Macron on social media platform X as “my brother,” describing the visit as a reflection of strong bilateral relations.

The French president is scheduled to take part in a trilateral meeting at the African Union headquarters with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. The talks are expected to focus on regional stability, development financing, and geopolitical cooperation.

Macron’s visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity across the Horn of Africa, a region shaped by shifting alliances, security concerns in the Red Sea corridor, and ongoing efforts to stabilize post-conflict states. Ethiopia, in particular, continues to rebuild after years of internal conflict and economic pressure while seeking to expand its international partnerships.

France has been steadily increasing its engagement in East Africa, positioning itself as a strategic European partner in areas such as infrastructure development, cultural cooperation, defense collaboration, and economic investment. Over recent years, Paris and Addis Ababa have expanded joint initiatives covering heritage preservation projects, training programs, and development assistance.

Ethiopia, for its part, has been actively pursuing diversified diplomatic and economic partnerships as it seeks to strengthen recovery and attract foreign investment. The government has emphasized infrastructure development, regional integration, and economic modernization as key pillars of its foreign policy.

During the visit, discussions are expected to center on boosting investment flows, enhancing development cooperation, and addressing shared security concerns in the Horn of Africa. The inclusion of UN and AU leadership in the meeting highlights the broader international interest in regional stability and coordinated multilateral responses.

The Horn of Africa remains a strategically significant region due to its proximity to global shipping routes, particularly the Red Sea corridor, which is critical for international trade. As a result, global powers including European states, Gulf countries, China, and the United States have all increased diplomatic and economic engagement in the region.

Macron’s presence in Ethiopia underscores France’s effort to maintain and expand its influence in Africa at a time of growing geopolitical competition. For Paris, deeper cooperation with Addis Ababa offers an opportunity to strengthen its role in African diplomacy and development initiatives.

For Ethiopia, the visit represents an opportunity to reinforce international partnerships, attract investment, and support its ongoing stabilization efforts as it navigates economic and political challenges.

The talks are expected to conclude with discussions on long-term cooperation frameworks, though no major agreements have yet been publicly announced.
