The man, identified as Mohammed Saidu, was taken to court after residents alerted environmental health officials about the condition of his property, saying the smell had made daily life unbearable.

Magistrate Halima Wali sentenced him to 14 days in detention and imposed a fine of 100,000 naira, describing his actions as a serious public health concern and highly inconsiderate to those living nearby.

Saidu, who works as a septic tank emptier, is believed to have been collecting and storing the waste, reportedly intending to sell it to farmers for use as fertiliser, a practice known in some parts of the region.

Residents told local reporters that the stench from the property had become overwhelming, prompting repeated complaints and attempts to resolve the issue privately before involving authorities.

One neighbour said they initially tried to speak to Saidu directly, but the situation continued until the case was escalated to environmental officials.

The magistrate reportedly visited the property before issuing her ruling and ordered that all waste be removed immediately, warning the defendant not to repeat the offence.

Following the court decision, residents said conditions in the neighbourhood had improved significantly.

Local community leaders said they had previously intervened in the matter but were unaware that the activity had resumed before the latest complaints were made.
