South Africa’s music industry is mourning the tragic death of Oscar Nyathi, widely known as Oscar Baxx, one half of the acclaimed Afro-house duo Malumz on Decks. The musician and entrepreneur was shot and killed in a deadly attack in Midrand, Johannesburg, on May 28.
His death was confirmed in an official statement released by OWNiT Muzik Events and shared on the duo’s social media platforms. The statement described Nyathi as a beloved artist, cultural icon and community builder whose influence extended far beyond music.
According to reports, the shooting occurred near the entrance of Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate in Midrand. Nyathi was travelling in a Toyota vehicle with three other occupants when two armed suspects on motorbikes allegedly ambushed the vehicle. The attackers reportedly opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Nyathi and another passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that investigators have opened cases of two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry, with fellow musicians, friends and fans expressing shock and sadness over the loss. Many remembered Nyathi for his humility, generosity and commitment to uplifting young people through music and business initiatives.
Originally from Ekurhuleni, Nyathi began his career as an event promoter before partnering with Mandla Mtshali to form Malumz on Decks. The duo grew into one of South Africa’s most successful dance music acts, earning widespread recognition for their Afro-house sound and energetic performances.
Their breakthrough success included popular releases such as “Shayi’Number”, major radio exposure, and industry accolades. In 2020, the duo won Remix of the Year at the South African Music Awards. They later signed with Warner Music Africa in 2023, further expanding their reach across the continent.
Beyond music, Nyathi was involved in entrepreneurship and community development projects. He used his platform to support youth empowerment initiatives and campaigns addressing social challenges, including gender-based violence.
Friends and colleagues have described him as a visionary who consistently created opportunities for others while remaining dedicated to his family, friends and community.
His death leaves a significant void in South African music, with many fans remembering him not only for his contributions to Afro-house but also for the positive impact he made in the lives of countless people.
