Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has cautioned wealthy parents against over-pampering their children, warning that shielding them from every form of hardship could undermine their ability to develop resilience and appreciate the value of hard work.
Ozokwor gave the advice during a recent interview, where she urged parents to allow their children to experience manageable challenges rather than attempting to provide them with a life free from struggle.
According to the actress, parents who constantly protect their children from difficulties in an effort to give them a better life may unintentionally deprive them of important life lessons.
She explained that growing up surrounded by wealth can also make it difficult for children to understand the sacrifices and effort their parents made to build their fortunes.
“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did,” Ozokwor said.
She clarified that parents should not deliberately subject their children to hardship, but should allow them to “struggle” and go through the process of learning responsibility.
Using wealthy families with multiple properties as an example, she noted that children could inherit significant assets without fully understanding the journey and sacrifices behind their parents’ achievements.
Ozokwor’s comments have sparked conversations about parenting, wealth and the importance of raising children with discipline, responsibility and resilience.
