Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith has confirmed their engagement to fashion designer Christian Cowan after months of speculation surrounding their relationship.

Smith revealed the news in an interview with The New York Times, confirming that Cowan is their fiancé. The couple, who have been together for about three years, had previously remained quiet about reports that they were engaged.

The confirmation comes ahead of the release of Smith’s fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, which is set to arrive on August 21. The 12-track project is inspired by their relationship with Cowan, whose eye colour gave the album its title.

However, Smith has made it clear that the album will not present a perfect or entirely happy picture of their relationship. The singer said their emotions can shift quickly, with moments of happiness sometimes accompanied by sadness.

Smith described the project as an honest reflection of love and the complicated emotions that can come with it. The songs explore different sides of their relationship while also reflecting Smith’s wider experiences and personal perspective.

The singer also spoke about the significance of creating romantic music as a queer artist at a time when public debates and negative attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people remain widespread.

Smith said there was something powerful about being queer and openly singing love songs, adding that they would not allow negativity to influence the way they express love.

Smith and Cowan reportedly began their relationship in 2022 after connecting online. Their professional relationship has also featured prominently in Smith’s creative work.

The pair collaborated on the music video for Smith’s song “I’m Not Here To Make Friends”, with Cowan bringing his experience as a fashion designer into the visual project.

They later made their first major red carpet appearance together at the 2026 Met Gala. Smith attended as Cowan’s muse and wore a dramatic feathered outfit created by the designer.

Cowan later shared details of the look on Instagram, describing the outfit as a tribute to Smith and their relationship. He called the design a “love letter” to the singer, adding another personal touch to their public appearance.

Before their Met Gala appearance, reports also emerged that the couple had been overheard discussing their wedding plans at the Mark Hotel in New York. A person who was reportedly in the hotel lobby at the time claimed to have heard the pair talking about their upcoming marriage.

The engagement confirmation now adds another chapter to the couple’s relationship as Smith prepares to enter a new era of music.

With Hazel Eyes centred largely on love, emotion and personal experiences, fans are expected to hear a more intimate side of the singer when the album is released.

Smith’s latest announcement combines two major moments in their personal and professional life: the confirmation of their engagement to Cowan and the upcoming release of an album inspired by their relationship.
