Uganda has announced withdrawal from the Invictus Games, two months after confirming plans to participate in the international sporting event for wounded and injured military personnel.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni announced the decision on X saying Uganda did not want Uganda participation to be interpreted as opposition to King Charles III.
I see that Uganda shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval Kainerugaba wrote.
Ugandan government spokesman Alan Kasujja confirmed that Kainerugaba determines whether the Uganda People’s Defence Force participates in the Invictus Games.
The announcement followed reports that Buckingham Palace had clarified that Prince Harry and Meghan who have returned to the UK are no working members of the Royal Family. Reports suggested the development contributed to concerns surrounding Uganda participation.
However royal sources said King Charles supports projects that assist wounded service personnel. The Invictus Games organisers said they had not received notification of Uganda withdrawal and were seeking clarification.
Uganda participation in the 2027 Games, in Birmingham was announced in July making it the 26th country to join the event.
The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry to support the rehabilitation and recovery of injured service personnel through sport.
