Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 589 as desperate search for survivors continues
The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela has climbed to 589, with nearly 3,000 people injured, as emergency crews race against time to find survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the updated figures, while international rescue teams from countries including Switzerland and Mexico have joined local emergency responders in search operations across Caracas and the state of La Guaira. Rescue efforts continued overnight, with at least one woman pulled alive from the rubble.
Families are anxiously searching for missing loved ones as hospitals struggle to cope with the growing number of casualties. Medical workers in La Guaira say healthcare facilities are overwhelmed and facing a critical shortage of supplies.
The two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck just one minute apart on Wednesday night. The second quake was the strongest recorded in Venezuela since 1900, leaving widespread destruction and raising fears that the death toll could continue to rise as rescue operations continue.
