Suspected Gunman at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Identified as 31-Year-Old Californian

The man arrested after gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, has been identified by law enforcement as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California.

Authorities say the suspect opened fire inside the Washington Hilton hotel on a level above the ballroom where US President Donald Trump was attending the high-profile event alongside government officials and journalists.

Police confirmed that Allen exchanged gunfire with security agents before being detained. He was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Officials say he was taken to hospital for evaluation and was not struck by gunfire during the incident.

According to US media reports, Allen allegedly told investigators he intended to target members of the Trump administration. A document believed to be linked to the suspect suggests he planned to attack officials “from highest-ranking to lowest,” though these claims have not been independently verified.

Investigators are treating the suspect as a lone actor. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said preliminary findings indicate the motive was politically driven, though the full investigation is ongoing.

Authorities are also examining how the suspect breached security. Early findings suggest he may have assembled the weapon inside the hotel and travelled across the country prior to the attack.

Background details reveal Allen described himself as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and teacher. He studied at the California Institute of Technology and later completed a master’s degree in computer science at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

He is also reported to have made a small political donation to Kamala Harris’ campaign in 2024 and had no declared party affiliation on voter records.

The suspect now faces federal charges including the use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer. He is expected to appear in court for formal charges.

The incident has raised serious questions about security at one of Washington’s most high-profile annual events, as investigations continue into how the suspect managed to get so close to senior officials.
