Ghana saw a jump in financial fraud cases. This happened in 2025. The Payment Service Providers sector was the target.
The Bank of Ghana looked at the numbers. They found out that fraud cases went up by 48 percent. This is what they said in their 2025 Fraud Report. The report showed that there were 16,733 fraud cases in 2024. In 2025 this number went up to 24,778.
Even though the number of fraud cases went up the total amount of money that was at risk did not go up much. It was GH¢99 million in 2024. In 2025 it was GH¢101 million.
The Bank of Ghana said that fraud cases have been going up for the four years. In 2022 there were 15,164 cases. In 2025 there were 24,778 cases. The amount of money at risk also went up. It was GH¢82 million in 2022. In 2025 it was GH¢101 million.
The Payment Service Providers sector was the reason for the jump in fraud cases. They saw a 98 percent increase in fraud cases. The amount of money at risk also went up by 42 percent.
The Bank of Ghana said that this is because more people are using transactions. Some people do not know much about transactions. This makes it easy for fraudsters to trick them.
In 2025 the Payment Service Providers sector saw 24,124 electronic fraud incidents. In 2024 they saw 15,673 cases. This is a 54 percent increase. The amount of money at risk also went up. It was GH¢19 million in 2024. In 2025 it was GH¢37 million.
Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions saw results. The Payment Service Providers sector saw a jump in fraud cases.. Banks saw a decrease in the amount of money at risk. It was GH¢75 million in 2024. In 2025 it was GH¢57 million.
Cash suppression was the problem for banks. It was GH¢40.7 million. This was because of one incident of GH¢36 million.
Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions saw an increase in fraud exposure. It was GH¢4.5 million in 2024. In 2025 it was GH¢8 million. Forgery and document manipulation were the problems.
There was a decrease in the number of bank and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions employees who were involved in fraud. It was 365 in 2024. In 2025 it was 219.
Out of these employees 139 were involved in cash theft and cash suppression. The banks fired 75 employees in 2025. This is less, than the 155 employees who were fired in 2024.
The Bank of Ghana was able to recover some of the money that was lost to fraud. They got back GH¢3.7 million. This reduced the amount of money at risk. It was GH¢68.2 million. Then it went down to GH¢64.5 million.
The Bank of Ghana said that they need to work to stop financial fraud. They need to work with the banks, the regulators the law enforcement agencies and the customers.
They said that they will keep an eye on the banks. They will make sure that the banks are following the rules. They will also teach people how to prevent fraud. The Bank of Ghana wants to make sure that Ghanas financial sector is safe. They want to make sure that people can trust the banks and the Payment Service Providers.
