Five Kenyan Officers Killed in Suspected Al-Shabaab Border Attack
Five Kenyan security officers have reportedly been killed after their patrol vehicle struck a suspected roadside bomb during an operation near the country’s border with Somalia.
The officers were conducting a routine patrol in Mandera County on Tuesday night when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device, or IED. The victims reportedly included four members of Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group and a National Police Reservist.
The explosion occurred in El-Raamo, Kutulo, along the Alungu Main Supply Route, a road frequently used by security forces operating near the Kenya-Somalia border. The powerful blast completely destroyed the patrol vehicle and killed all five officers.
Shortly after the explosion, suspected militants reportedly opened fire on other members of the security convoy, triggering a gun battle at the scene.
The officers returned fire but were unable to prevent the attackers from escaping. The militants are believed to have fled towards the nearby Somali border following the confrontation.
Kenyan authorities have since launched a major manhunt for those responsible for the attack. Additional security personnel have reportedly been deployed across the area to track the suspected attackers and strengthen security along the border.
No militant organisation has officially claimed responsibility for the incident. However, Kenyan officials suspect that Al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based extremist group, could be behind the attack.
Al-Shabaab has carried out numerous attacks and ambushes in northeastern Kenya over the years, particularly in areas close to the Somali border. The group has frequently targeted security personnel and civilian locations as part of its activities.
Investigators are examining whether the roadside bomb was planted several days before the attack. Officials suspect the attackers may have been monitoring the movement of security forces and waiting for an opportunity to target a patrol vehicle.
Security officials had reportedly received intelligence warning of possible militant activity in the area before the incident. The information had prompted authorities to increase patrols and security operations along the route.
The latest attack has raised renewed concerns about the threat posed by militants operating along Kenya’s porous border with Somalia. The region has faced repeated security challenges linked to cross-border attacks and militant activity.
Authorities are continuing investigations while security teams search surrounding areas for the attackers. Officials are also expected to review existing security measures and intelligence operations in the region following the deaths.
The incident is one of the latest deadly security incidents affecting Kenya’s northeastern counties, where authorities continue efforts to prevent militant attacks and protect security personnel and local communities.
