The British singer’s Loop Tour has faced growing criticism after Macklemore was removed from the US leg following his pro-Palestinian comments during a concert in New Jersey earlier this month.

Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, was dropped from the tour on Monday after stadium owners hosting Sheeran’s upcoming shows objected to his repeated “Free Palestine” remarks on stage.

Sheeran has denied being responsible for Macklemore’s removal, saying the decision was made by the tour promoter.

The controversy has since led to further changes to Sheeran’s touring lineup, with four supporting acts leaving the US tour. Those departures included Sheeran’s backing band and musician Finneas, who is known for his collaborations with his sister, pop star Billie Eilish.

The dispute comes as more musicians and performers have publicly addressed the war in Gaza and violence involving Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Sheeran, 35, has largely avoided making public political statements about the conflict. However, he addressed the controversy in an Instagram statement on Tuesday, saying that his decision not to speak publicly about his personal views should not be interpreted as indifference.

“I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict,” Sheeran said.

He added that choosing not to discuss those views publicly did not mean he lacked concern about the situation.

Sheeran also defended his decision to keep his concerts focused on music rather than political debate, saying audiences attending his shows do not expect them to function as political forums.

The comments followed criticism from some people who accused the singer of failing to challenge the stadium owners over Macklemore’s removal.

Calls for boycotts of Sheeran’s shows have emerged online, adding to the pressure surrounding his Philadelphia performance.

The singer’s decision to remain publicly apolitical has also become a point of debate within the music industry, particularly as artists increasingly use concerts and social media to express their views on the conflict.

Gretchen Larsen, a professor specialising in the music industry at Durham University Business School, said the controversy was creating reputational challenges for Sheeran.

“Clearly, there’s some real discontent around how this whole situation is being managed, and he’s definitely having to do some brand reputation management,” Larsen said.

The Philadelphia concert is therefore taking place against a backdrop of protests, security preparations and continuing debate over the relationship between music, politics and freedom of expression.

Sheeran is expected to continue his scheduled performances despite the controversy, while the dispute surrounding Macklemore’s removal remains a source of tension among some performers and fans.

Macklemore has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinians and previously released the song “Hind’s Hall”, which criticised US policy towards Israel and highlighted the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

His removal from Sheeran’s tour has prompted wider discussion about whether artists should be able to make political statements during performances and how concert organisers and venue owners should respond to those statements.

For Sheeran, Saturday’s Philadelphia show will mark the beginning of the next stage of his US tour under heightened attention following the dispute.
