Internationally renowned South African DJ and producer Black Coffee has dismissed a viral social media post that falsely attributed controversial remarks about xenophobia and South Africa’s global image to him. The Grammy Award-winning artist quickly moved to clarify the situation after the post spread widely online.

The misleading image claimed that Black Coffee said it was “embarrassing” to be South African abroad due to perceptions of xenophobia. The post, which included his photo and the South African flag, also contained a misspelling of his name, which helped users identify it as fake.

Responding directly on X (formerly Twitter), whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, the DJ simply wrote “Fake news,” shutting down the claim and distancing himself from the fabricated statement.

His response was widely shared and praised by fans, many of whom thanked him for quickly correcting the misinformation and preventing his name from being linked to a sensitive national debate.

The incident has reignited broader discussions online about illegal immigration and xenophobia in South Africa, issues that have been the focus of ongoing public protests and heated political debate in recent months.

Several groups have staged demonstrations calling for stricter action on undocumented migration, while critics argue that some of the rhetoric has contributed to rising tensions and accusations of xenophobia.

The debate has intensified ahead of June 30, a date referenced by certain civic groups as a deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country, sparking speculation about possible protests and disruptions.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned against vigilantism and emphasized that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of official authorities, not private groups, while promising tougher action against undocumented migration.
