Independent candidate secures re-election after campaign focused on political stability
President Carlos Vila Nova has been re-elected for a second five-year term in São Tomé and Príncipe, according to preliminary results released by the country’s National Electoral Commission.
The 66-year-old leader secured more than 55% of the vote, allowing him to avoid a second-round run-off election.
His main challenger, parliamentarian Nito Abreu, who was backed by the country’s prime minister, received about 41% of the vote.
Vila Nova, who first became president in 2021, campaigned on a message of political stability as the island nation continues to navigate economic and political challenges.
Election marked by low turnout concerns
Although the results showed a clear victory for Vila Nova, election officials raised concerns about voter participation.
National Electoral Commission chief Jeudiger Nascimento said many citizens arrived at polling stations but did not cast their ballots. However, no official turnout figures were immediately released.
The low participation rate has raised questions about public engagement in the country’s democratic process.
Vila Nova runs as independent candidate
The election marked a significant political shift for Vila Nova, who previously came to power through the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party.
However, he later broke away from the party after dismissing the prime minister at the time.
