Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel Dies After On-Field Collision
Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering serious injuries during a second-division match between Tenerife and FC Andorra.
The striker sustained head and chest injuries following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during Monday’s match.
De Miguel’s condition was initially described as stable but serious. However, his health deteriorated on Tuesday morning, and he died at 07:00 GMT.
CD Tenerife confirmed his death in an emotional statement.
“Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today.”
Collision during stoppage time
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time, with Tenerife and Andorra level at 2-2.
Owono rushed towards the centre circle to clear a long ball when his knee appeared to collide with De Miguel.
The striker remained motionless on the pitch as medical teams attended to him before he was taken by ambulance from Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez to hospital.
Players from both teams were visibly distressed, with several of De Miguel’s team-mates seen in tears.
The referee showed Owono a straight red card before abandoning the match.
Spanish media, including Marca, reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics on the way to hospital.
Tributes pour in
FC Andorra expressed its condolences to De Miguel’s family, team-mates and Tenerife.
The club said it was devastated by his death.
Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns Andorra, also paid tribute, writing: “I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus.”
De Miguel’s former club Castellon said it was difficult to find words to describe the loss and extended its condolences to his loved ones.
La Liga president Javier Tebas described the death as an irreparable loss and offered his sympathies to the striker’s family and the football community.
Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappe also shared his condolences on social media, writing: “Much sadness, there are no words.”
Following the death, the Spanish Football Federation announced the postponement of Tuesday’s Spanish Cup fixtures.
Two first-round men’s Copa del Rey matches and a women’s Copa de la Reina fixture involving Espanyol and AS Celtas were affected.

Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his professional career at Leganes in 2015 and went on to represent eight clubs in Spain.

De Miguel signed a three-year contract with Tenerife in 2025 and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for the club.
He is survived by his daughter, Carla de Miguel Fernandez, who was born in 2025.
