Coordinated attacks rock Mali, leaving at least 16 injured across multiple cities

Mali has been hit by one of its most extensive coordinated attacks in recent years, with armed groups targeting multiple locations across the capital Bamako and several regional cities, injuring at least 16 people.

Government spokesperson Issa Ousmane Coulibaly described the incidents as a “complex and coordinated” operation carried out in the early hours of April 25, 2026. The attacks reportedly hit military and civilian sites in key garrison towns including Kati, Sévaré, Gao, Kidal, and parts of Bamako.

Officials confirmed that both civilians and security personnel were injured and are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not yet released any confirmed death toll, while describing the material damage as limited.

The al-Qaida-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility, saying it carried out the assaults alongside the Azawad Liberation Front, a Tuareg separatist group operating in northern Mali.

Mali has faced long-running instability driven by Islamist insurgencies linked to al-Qaida and Islamic State affiliates, as well as separatist movements in the north. Similar large-scale attacks have previously targeted military and airport facilities in the country.
